Aesthetic surgery of the human voice is a complex set of surgical measures for the voice repair. Thanks to glottoplastics it is possible to change the sound of voice in men and women. Voice surgery is peculiarly important for people whose jobs are connected with voice and speech activities. These people suffer from the following diseases of the vocal folds such as polyps, cysts, granuloma and nodes in paralysis of the folds. Glottoplastics is common among men who possess the high-pitched voice and women with the gruff voice. What is more, surgery of the vocal folds helps to cope with the vocal rehabilitation, as it sounds too quiet, unintelligible and it gets hoarse. If the patient does not like his own voice, its sound can also be repaired by surgeries on the vocal folds.

Examination and diagnostics methods

Voice problems examination includes laryngoscopy. It is an endoscopy of the larynx which allows the doctor to carefully assess the condition of the vocal folds. To ensure accurate diagnosis doctors refer patients for CT scanning (computerized tomography), biopsy of neoplasm if indicated. Before the surgery the patient is highly recommended to give up bad habits such as smoking and alcohol abuse. General and biochemical blood tests, clinical urinalysis need to be done. These tests allow us to identify the presence of current pathological processes in the body, which may become a contraindication to performing vocal fold aesthetic surgery. In addition, more blood tests are assigned to indicate the presence or absence of HIV infection, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and rhesus blood factor. Moreover, coagulation test, ECG and chest X-ray examination are performed.

Voice surgery. Methods of treatment.

Method for changing the pitch of the voice is called glottoplastics.
Injection glottoplastics is a surgical treatment to lower the pitch of the voice. The surgery is performed under anesthesia. Biogel is injected into the vocal folds. Microsurgical repairing procedures are performed with the use of biopolymers with the disinfecting capacity and they cannot cause allergic reactions. Lipofilling, teflon and collagen are injected into the focal folds. These materials are insoluble and can penetrate the muscle tissue through the needle hole. Sometimes, to lower the tone of the voice before the injection of biogel, a fragment of cartilage is excised separating it from the larynx. After the surgery, the vocal folds are shortened, get flatter and the voice is lowered.
After the glottoplastics the resting voice period lasts 7-10 days. Injections of biogel into the vocal folds, compared to botox, are not resolved over time. It is possible to lower the voice with the glottoplastics. Injections of biogel have precedence over the botox ones. Injections of botox do not provide the permanent effect. If too much botox is injected, the relaxation of muscles is stronger than required. The effect of botox injection is not permanent and disappears over time because of new coming neuromuscular liaisons. Biogel does not resolve and is not destroyed over time, thus it allows to consolidate the effect for years to come.

Preparation for surgery

To perform the glottoplastics the doctor examines the patient, refers him for such procedures as video fiberoptic laryngoscopy and stroboscopy. If it is required, additional examinations can be asked to be done, depending on the situation. The patient should not have any contraindications for the surgery. It is necessary to disclose diseases of the gastrointestinal tract that may interfere with the recovery of vocal folds, for example, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Surgery and postoperative care

The resting voice period for 10 days is recommended. The first voice training is usually scheduled 2 weeks after the surgery. Patients should cut out eating spicy food after the surgery. Healthy diet is said to be followed. Dairy products, nuts, red wine trigger myxopoiesis. Besides, if healthy diet is not followed, there is a high risk of reflux. Drink plenty of still water; it will speed up the regenerative process. It is recommended to forego all sport activities within 6 weeks after the surgery. Exercises that include elements of compression, grasping (strength building, lifting weights, interception in equilibrium exercises) can place in jeopardy the healing process of the vocal folds. It is better to refrain from air travel, bathhouses, swimming pools and saunas. All procedures prescribed by your doctor should be followed. These can be inhalations, endolaryngeal infusions, work with phonopaedists.

Possible complications

Glottoplastics doesn’t cause any complications. In rare cases, there can be temporary changes in the terms of sound instability, foreign body sensation on throat, hoarseness, neck pain, bleeding, sputum or cough. All these symptoms can be eliminated with the help of medicine prescribed by your doctor. Voice quality and clarity can be self-controlled, including regularly performing exercises for the voice repair.

To sum up

Sometimes just the use of conservative methods can help to repair the voice, give it sonority or slightly change its timber.
